A General's Ranks in Army, during WW I, started out with the Generals of the Army. Major General John J. Pershing, who was the selected by the president of the United States, to lead the first American Expeditionary Force to France, arrived on June 13, 1917. On October 6, 1917, he was promoted to the rank of General, which had been vacated since the Civil War.
