World War Two

The World War Two section, holds as much fascination for me, as World War One and my grandfather. The main reason,  my father  Jack, who was a Navigation Instructor during that period.

Along with dad, I had a bunch of uncles who served in the Navy and  a cousin of dad’s, who inspired his wanting to fly. His cousin “Bud,” had actually gone to England and fought with the English before America got involved, then ended up as a pilot of a bomber crew. My understanding is that he flew many missions, and was highly regarded, though I have very little information on him.

The World War Two section, will eventually cover a wide variety of subjects, but to date, the following menu tabs are available:

  • Jacks Air Force: This group will focus on my dad Jack’s service during World War Two. Although he wanted to be a pilot, he ended up as a Navigation Instructor for bombing crews.

  • General WWII History: As this section grows, I will sub-divide it’s parts in more specific areas. For now it has such things as Pearl Harbor, midget submarines, & the Coastal Defense Command, along with Doolittle Raiders, Operation Mincemeat, Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, and the sinking of the Graf Spee.

  • Aircraft: I’ve had a lifelong interest, in military aircraft from a young age. This section will grow over time, but includes Filming the Battle of Britain, (Which occurred while stationed in England), and my first post on an aircraft, the RAF Hawker Hurricane).

  • Tanks: Like aircraft, I also have a growing interest in tanks. Read an interesting two-part story on a Sherman tank crew member who I met, that recalled a harrowing tale of survival. Included, a story from the Colling’s Foundation, on an M4A3 Sherman tank they were able to get on a long term loan.

  • Hero’s: Interesting characters and hero’s of World War Two. Jimmy Doolittle, Ted Williams, Nancy Wake and others.
