By 1966 we moved on to high school and the TV series RAT PATROL. Vietnam was a distant skirmish and hadn’t penetrated our lives as yet. We were still young and unexposed to the realities of war, and still played our childish boyhood games. We sat for hours in the back of my dad’s old Ford Pickup, bouncing up and down over the dry sands of the Sahara, chasing Rommel’s men.

The Gallant Men 1962, Sgt. Mac’s Review

Sgt. Mac The short-lived TV series, The Gallant Men, was a 1962 ABC series which tried to compete with the more successful COMBAT, which ran from 1962-1967. Both shows started when I was still in junior high and I still have fond memories, especially of COMBAT, as it ran up to the time I entered the Air Force.

Sgt. Mac Sergeant Bilko, aka The Phil Silvers Show, was the very first memory I have of a television series, featuring the military. Although the TV show COMBAT, featuring Vic Morrow, was my favorite military show of my teen-age years, Sergeant Bilko, was the show of my childhood.

Sgt. Mac The TV series “COMBAT” was one of my favorites, and ran from 1962-until I entered the Air Force in 1967. As kids, we knew little to nothing about war, so the TV show “COMBAT” was our initiation.
