The Heroes Vote Initiative, is something that all veterans and civilians should help existing military personnel register for, if they so desire. After all, our right to vote, is one of the most important rights we have as Americans.
In my day, I was one of the fortunate few that somehow ended up in England, Germany, or elsewhere instead of Vietnam. But no matter where one served, our obligation and duty to serve our country, also came with the responsibility to vote in our nations elections, regardless of party, whether it be city, state or federal elections.
My memory is a bit fuzzy on how absentee voting actually took place, all those many years ago. I do recall filling out some kind of a card, when I reached England, that mentioned we were signing up to vote back home by absentee ballot. When the time came, I received the ballot, studied the information and made my vote known. I have no idea, how the thing actually worked, but I believe it was an Air Force policy to register all new recruits.
I for one, came from a very strict conservative family. I only got to vote once, before I entered the Air Force and it was city elections for various positions. In those days, I was given a card, by my dad and TOLD who to vote for. Although I lied and told him, I voted for his guys, I voted for some who were not to his liking. After all, it was my right to vote for who I wanted and not his. I made my vote known, and was proud that I did.
The Military Voter Project’s, Heroes Vote Initiative, is a nationwide campaign to encourage military voter participation and to provide those voters, with the necessary tools to register, and request an absentee ballot. Please don’t let our military miss out on this important American Right! No matter your party affiliation or whether or not you have one, the RIGHT TO VOTE is something very special.
As part of the initiative, the Military Voter Project is creating strategic partnerships with local military and veterans groups, as well as state and local election officials. It’s especially important in the upcoming Presidential Elections in November.
